Nomads V Cainscross

A beautifully prepared Fromehall pitch and sunshine welcomed Cainscross for the first game of the new season. Despite lacking a number of players due to injury and call ups to the 1stXV, Nomads fielded a competitive side strengthened by the late inclusion of Ian Bushall at Fly Half.

In a 4 quarters game, Nomads started strongly, having the bulk of possession and territory. After some incisive running from Full-Back Jake Marsh and concerted forward drives, Chris Jones powered over at the base of the posts for a try converted by Ian Bushall. Unfortunately, Nomads scrum-half Callum Gibbs was forced off with a hand injury but was ably replaced by Chris Toon.

Nomads line-out was operating well with Nick Stringer, Ben Stephens and Aussie Bob providing a number of options and the scrummage was bolstered by the introduction of Charlie Foote. Cainscross however were battling well at the breakdown and showed pace and elusive running in their outside backs. A turnover resulted in a try under the posts for Cainscross but the conversion was missed.

The 3rd quarter heralded the introduction of super sub Josh, who was only on the pitch for 15 minutes but managed to power over for a score, dragging three defenders with him. Cainscross hit back instantly with a try but Nomads were not subdued for long. A number of close range pick and goes provided forward momentum and ended with Chris Toon diving over for the Nomads third try of the afternoon.

Cainscross however refused to buckle and more elusive outside running led to a converted try to bring the scores level.
In the final quarter, Nomads continued with strong forward work coupled with strong carries from centres Jamie Leworthy and Chris Jones. One of these carries led to Jake Marsh (now at Scrum-Half) feeding Tom Warner on the burst, who broke two tackles and ran in from 25m.

Stroud were now gaining in fluency and this coupled with excellent line out steals from Nick Stringer and Ben Stephens allowed Nomads to exert more pressure on Cainscross. A powerful surge from Aussie Bob and offload to Mark Samak broke the defensive line, the quick recycled ball allowed Chris Toon to go over for the final try of the afternoon.

Final Score Nomads 27-17 Cainscross
An excellent effort by all players provided a positive start to the new season.

Man of the Match : Ben Stephens (on debut) –controlling the line-out and excellent all around work all over the pitch.
