Stroud Rugby Club breath a sigh of relief

There were equal proportions of joy and relief for Stroud Rugby Club last night as Stroud District Council granted planning permission for 14 new homes on the strip of land at the Bath Road end of Stroud’s ground at Fromehall Park.
A dozen Club members attended the Council Chamber for the meeting of the Development Control Committee, to hear arguments for and against the proposal, which was key to the sale of a small strip of land at the Club to take it out of a difficult financial situation.
Club Chairman Jo Hammonds said,” It was both nerve-racking and reassuring to see the process taking place. It was extremely important for the future of the Club for planning permission to be granted, but it was really good to see how the officers presented application to inform the councillors, who in turn fully debated all of the issues from road safety and parking to protected play space and community cohesion.”
“Councillors showed a huge amount of concern over all of the issues raised and then through a great deal of pragmatism, common sense and compassion came to the conclusion we had hoped for.”
The Committee voted unanimously in favour of granting planning permission.
Club Vice Chair John Hughes said “We are extremely grateful to the Councillors for supporting the officer’s recommendation to permit the application as this will secure Stroud Rugby Football Club’s short term survival and long term future”
