Nomads beat strong Newent side

A strong Nomads side played some excellent rugby in patches and claimed a very good result against a strong Newent side. From the kick off play was end to end with both sides having scoring opportunities. before the large Newent pack took play into the Stroud 22 and gave their threequarters the chance to outpace the Stroud defence and score the first try which was converted. Nomads immediately took play into the Newent half and from several good forward drives full back and captain Sam Leworthy emerged from a pile of bodies having scored the try, converted by scrum half Joe Ashenford. With both sides playing attacking rugby the next score went to Newent after a promising Stroud attack broke down and the Newent openside wing forward kicked and chased the ball and won their second touchdown, again converted. The Nomads backs with Sam Leworthy, Jordan Phipps, James Norbury and Aaron Raath always looking dangerous with ball in hand and looked to have breached the Newent defence , but a loose pass enabled the Newent threequarters to pick up the ball and run the length of the pitch to score their third try.

This stung Stroud into action and good forward play with No8 Mike Alley and wing forwards Tom Flanagan and Ryan Kibble to the fore giving Nomads backs good clean ball and enabling centre James Norbury to pick his way through the Newent defence and score, again converted. With the first half near the end further strong running by the Nomads backs released James Norbury on an arcing run and outstripping the Newent defence to score his second try, again converted, and bring and exciting first half to a close.

The second half was equally enthralling with both sides still playing free flowing rugby. Second half substitute wing forward Regan Herbert made his presence felt when he was on hand to take a try scoring pass after a thrilling passage of play involving a number of backs and forwards, converted by Joe Ashenford. With injuries taking there toll on both sides play became slightly disjointed, but the pace of the game continued unabated and with the Nomads forwards getting more and more possession a dropped ball by Newent allowed Regan Herbert to kick on and pick up and score his second try again converted. With the second half coming to a close centre James Norbury showed his outstanding speed with a wonderful run through a tired Newent defence to score his third try, again converted. Newent not to be denied scored their fourth try right on full time after a good drive and a pick up by their scrum half.
