Stroud travelled to Cirencester looking to continue the momentum from last week’s win at Dursley. Despite some last minute unavailability, Nomads were still able to field a full squad.
1 Lee Marshall 2 Connor Voyce 3 Damien Cox 4 Adam Clark 5 Nick Stringer 6 James Nash 7 Tom Flanagan 8 Mark Phillips 9 Luke Dowemoore 10 Ian Bushall 11 Tom Taylor 12 Jamie Leworthy 13 Ben Wilkes 14 Dom Stephenson 15 Pete Sykes 16 Andre Sharp 17 Matt Doliczny 18 Alex Nash.
The early phases were fairly even until Nomads scored three tries in quick succession. From a solid scrum Leworthy carried powerfully into the heart of the defence before Dowemoore and Bushall combined to release Sykes on the left. Evading a number of tacklers, he then chipped ahead before outpacing the covering defence to score in the corner. Dowemoore converted. 0-7.
Nomads looked to spread the ball wide at every opportunity but the forwards were getting through their share of work with Marshall and Clark featuring regularly with strong carries. Another solid scrum allowed Phillips to pick and go from the base before feeding Dowemoore, whose well timed pass gave Sykes an easy run to the try line. Dowemoore converted. 0-14.
Straight from the restart a strong carry from Phillips took play back up to halfway before Dowemoore fed Marshall on the left. Although his pass to Taylor did not go to hand, it gave the chance for the winger to show off his footballing skills and hack the ball on and eventually dive over out wide. Another excellent conversion followed from Dowemoore and Nomads had raced into a commanding lead. 0-21.
Cirencester had their share of possession but Nomads defence was secure with Voyce, Flanagan and Bushall particularly combative in their chop tackling. The lineout was evenly balanced with loose ball often prevalent. Typically, Phillips scavenged a misplaced throw and allowed Leworthy to again carry strongly up the middle. Quick ball enabled Dowemoore to feed the backs and another perfectly timed pass, this time from Sykes, released Wilkes to cruise in from halfway. 0-26.
Nomads were in no mood to take their foot of the gas and Flanagan showed pace and power to take the play straight back at Cirencester from the kick-off. Phillips, Taylor and Nash continued the momentum before the backs took over. Quick hands from Bushall and Leworthy put Wilkes into space on the outside and the centre outstripped the defence before finding Sykes back on the inside for the Full Back to cross for his hat-trick. Dowemoore converted. 0-33.
In an almost carbon copy, great handling this time released Stephenson on the wing to show his pace before drawing the final defender and finding the supporting Sykes to cross again. Dowemoore converted. 0-40.
As well as four tries, Sykes was equally as effective in defence, making an excellent turnover on his own 22 allowing Flanagan to power through the middle again before finding Wilkes ranging up on the outside. The young centre sprinted clear of the defence before generously offloading to the supporting Nash to give the flanker a score beneath the posts. Dowemoore converted. 0-47.
Half Time Cirencester 2nd XV 0Stroud Nomads 47
Nomads made replacements at Half Time but continued to press at the start of the second half. Cirencester showed greater steel in defence stopped any early scores however Nomads were soon back on the scoreboard with Voyce and Phillips combining to hold up a maul. From the ensuing scrum, the backs released Taylor, who carried deep into the 22 before being felled by a high tackle. From the penalty, Dowemoore fed Marshall, who capitalised on a tiring defence to crash over. More accuracy from the boot of Dowemoore followed. 0-54.
This was certainly Nomads afternoon as even the occasional misplaced pass ended in a score. Sykes collected one such pass and with his trademark step and go, outpaced the defence on the outside before finding Stephenson in support for the winger to run in a well-deserved try. Dowemoore made it 8 from 9 to convert. 0-61.
Voyce, Doliczny and Marshall all continued to carry well and took play into the Cirencester half. From a scrum, Dowemoore fittingly scored the final try of the afternoon with a powerful surge through the defence from a Phillips offload. 0-66.
Cirencester pressed in the final minutes but Nomads commitment was absolute and excellent defence from all kept the line intact.
Full TimeCirencester 2ndXV 0Stroud Nomads 66
This was definitely Nomads most complete performance of the season and certainly carries on the positive momentum that runs through the squad at the moment. With players still to return from injury and unavailability the future looks bright for the Nomads with the blend of youth and experience seeming to be flourishing. Nomads will look to carry on winning ways when they return to Fromehall on Saturday 7th December when they face Spartans 2nd XV. (KO 1430).
